“Læs for Livet” is Danish for Read for Your Life.
We are a non-profit organization that uses books as a way to facilitate social change and give at-risk children and adolescents good experiences and a potential for better lives.
We collect books from private citizens, publishers, reviewers, authors and many others. The books are sorted into libraries containing 400-1000 books, and then donated to institutions and facilities for at-risk children and adolescents – for example orphanages, family treatment centers and youth facilities. The book selection for each institution is thoroughly evaluated and based on the requests of the children and adolescents as well as a variation of subjects and difficulty levels. Our focus is the joy of reading. Sometimes it’s a book about cars or Justin Bieber that’s the best. For other children or adolescents it’s poetry, comics or English classics. It isn’t so important what the children and adolescents read as that they read.
Read for Your Life was founded in 2012 by Rachel Röst. She is a children’s books author, has a MA in literary science and now runs Read for Your Life. She herself was placed in an institution at the age of 16, and books have had a significant meaning for her life path.
Today, Read for Your Life has a salaried staff and more than 30 volunteers. We have a large book cellar at Østerbro in Copenhagen, which is also our workplace.
Since 2012, Read for Your Life has donated more than 150 libraries to institutions throughout the country. That’s approximately 100,000 books worth more than 15 million kroner (approximately 2.5 million US dollars).
Rachel Röst has personally been awarded numerous prizes for her work in building the organization, and Read for Your Life has also received several awards.
In November 2016, Read for Your Life received a donation of 6 million (approximately 1 million US dollars) from the Egmont Foundation to fund the organization over the following four years.
