Denmark has been named the happiest country in the world multiple times; but in spite of this, far too many children and adolescents live in horrendous conditions. Every single day, children and adolescents are placed outside the home when letting them live in an often chaotic, neglectful household is no longer believed responsible. Placed children are at greater risk for mental illness, teenage pregnancy, premature death (especially suicide), substance abuse, homelessness and crime.
It is well documented that the best protection against these serious problems is a good school experience. And being able to read is the most important factor for success in school. That’s why support of reading is so important, and encountering books can be a stepping stone to a better life.
